The Manor House of Argemil is located in the peaceful village of Argemil, part of the parish of Ribas, in the municipality of Valpaços. Its location in a predominantly rural environment, with its main façade facing a national road, grants it a notable and easily visible presence in the landscape.
Dating back to the 17th century, the Manor House of Argemil is a notable example of the region's manor architecture, predominantly built in granite. The main body of the residence is distinguished by its imposing double staircase, whose handrails begin with elegant volutes. At the top of the staircase, a landing covered by a small porch invites access to the interior, while on the first floor of the main façade, rectangular windows are observed.
An integral part of this complex is its chapel, connected to the house by a covered walkway on the upper floor level, which underneath forms a round arch passage. The chapel's façade catches the eye with its door and window openings, all crowned by pediments. At its highest point, a bell tower topped by a pediment completes the composition, with the granite work in this structure being of particular artistic interest.
The history of the Manor House of Argemil reflects the manorial life of the 17th century, the period in which it is presumed to have been erected, possibly at the initiative of Francisco Ferreira Furtado, who was the morgado (heir to a family estate) of Argemil. The work may have been continued by his daughter, Francisca de Mendonça. Currently, the house maintains its residential function, perpetuating its connection to the past.
This manor is officially recognized for its heritage value, being classified as a Property of Municipal Interest. This classification underlines the importance of the Manor House of Argemil as a representative element of local architecture and history, preserving the memory of an era.
