The Chapel of the Lord of the Afflicted is located in the village of Passadouro, within the municipality of Alijó. It is situated in the urban area known as "Além da Fonte" (Beyond the Fountain), a space that invites a moment of greater calm and contemplation. Its position, within the village's fabric, allows for a peaceful visit, providing a point of observation and reflection on local life and the surrounding landscape.
This small temple stands out for its contemporary construction, featuring a remarkably simple architectural design. Far from exuberant ornamentation, the chapel was conceived with clean lines and an uncomplicated form, conveying a sense of sobriety and peace. Its roof, designed in two planes, blends discreetly into the landscape, complementing the simple aesthetic of the ensemble.
Upon crossing the chapel's threshold, the visitor discovers an interior that, despite its modesty, captivates with its authenticity. Parts of the walls are lined with tiles (azulejos), an application that delicately evokes the Portuguese artistic tradition. The central point of the space is a cross with the representation of the crucified Christ, whose vernacular character is noteworthy. This piece, executed with local and expressive sensibility, underscores the chapel's deep connection to the community and its faith, inviting contemplation and a moment of introspection.
