The Chapel of São João da Fraga is located in the remote and distinctive village of Pitões das Júnias, belonging to the municipality of Montalegre. Specifically in the Ponte do Pereira area, this small temple stands impressively at over a thousand meters of altitude, atop a mountain. Its position is unique, built upon a large and visible rocky outcrop, giving it a striking presence in the landscape.
The environment surrounding the chapel is predominantly rural and isolated, typical of the high mountains of Trás-os-Montes. This location offers a unique perspective on the vastness of the surrounding nature, an invitation to appreciate the serenity of Barroso.
The origins of the Chapel of São João da Fraga remain a mystery, with no records identifying its original builder. However, its existence has been attested since the 18th century, with a mention in 1758 in the Parish Memories of the parish.
At that time, it was already known as the "hermitage of Saint Archangel of São João, on the Gerês crag," indicating an ancient tradition. Historical information reveals that the site was, at that time, the setting for an annual pilgrimage, specifically on Saint John's Day, underscoring its devotional relevance for the mountain communities of yesteryear.
Beyond its historical and religious significance, the Chapel of São João da Fraga offers a natural setting of rare beauty. Its isolated location atop the mountain allows for panoramic views that stretch across the mountainous landscape, revealing the impressiveness of Montalegre's highlands.
The site inspires tranquility and invites introspection, with the grandeur of the rocks and the vastness of the horizon defining its ambiance. It is a point where architecture harmoniously merges with raw nature, providing a moment of connection with the essence of the territory.
