The Chapel of Our Lady of Remedies is located in the peaceful village of Fervença, part of the union of parishes of Ermelo and Pardelhas, in the municipality of Mondim de Basto. Set in a predominantly rural landscape, the chapel stands on a hillside overlooking the Fervença stream, a tributary of the Olo River. It is situated in a small square, paved with granite cubes, forming the heart of the village and surrounded by traditional houses and structures such as haylofts, which contribute to a genuine and welcoming atmosphere.
The history of the Chapel of Our Lady of Remedies dates back to 1756, the year of its construction, and it was blessed the following year, in 1757. This place of worship, which even served as a site for burial requests in the late 18th century, demonstrates its importance to the local community throughout the centuries. Over time, the chapel underwent various interventions, with improvement works registered in 1900, such as the insertion of a clock on the main facade. More recently, in 1990, the sacristy was built and its interior was renovated, including the placement of tiles and a new floor, with the ceiling painting and altarpiece restoration carried out in the 21st century.
With its Baroque design, the Chapel of Our Lady of Remedies features a simple rectangular plan. Its facades, mostly plastered and painted white, contrast with the granite quoins and base. The main facade, facing west, culminates in an elegant cornice gable, adorned with a cross at the apex. A striking detail is its bell gable, with a perfect arch, positioned above the left quoin. The entrance portal, with a straight lintel, proudly displays the date of its original construction: 1756. Above it, a rectangular window houses a clock dated 1900, a testament to the renovations it underwent. One of the side doors, facing south, is accessed by a stone staircase and a small balcony, also displaying a date from the 18th century.
Upon entering the chapel, visitors encounter a unique and harmonious space. The ceiling, with a curved profile and made of stucco, is painted blue and features a serene image of the Sacred Heart of Mary in the center. The nave and the high choir, supported by turned wooden balusters, are highlighted by a wainscot of industrial-patterned tiles in blue, orange, and white, which add a distinctive touch to the atmosphere. Inside, other notable features include the semicircular holy water fonts and, centrally, the polychrome wooden altarpiece structure that lines the end wall. This work, dating from the 20th century, displays shades of pink, yellow, and grey, with faux marble finishes, composing the main altarpiece and two collateral altarpieces that visually enrich this temple, inviting contemplation.
