The O Cantaréu Association is located in Lordelo, a locality that is part of the municipality of Vila Real. It is specifically situated in Lugar do Cruzeiro, an area that is integrated into the community life of the village, providing an environment that reflects the simplicity and authenticity of Transmontane daily life. Visitors find themselves here integrated into the network of streets and houses that make up this residential core.
Founded in 1979, the O Cantaréu Association has, from its inception, assumed the mission of preserving and disseminating cultural heritage. Over the years, it has been a meeting point and a center for the development of various artistic and traditional expressions of the region. Its work encompasses areas such as theater, dance, song, and, particularly, folklore, contributing to keeping local roots and customs alive.
One of the Association's pillars is its folklore group, created in 1993. This group stands out as one of the most authentic representations of the culture of Trás-os-Montes. Its performances consist of the recreation of ethnographic scenes that illustrate the traditions and way of life of the people of Vila Real, from their daily chores to moments of celebration. The group's dedication to authenticity is recognized by its affiliation with the Portuguese Folklore Federation.
The O Cantaréu Association is also responsible for organizing events that mark the locality's cultural calendar. Annually, it hosts a festival dedicated to folklore, a moment when traditional dances and songs take center stage. Furthermore, the association organizes a gathering of "cantadores de Janeiras" (singers of January carols), perpetuating an old popular musical tradition that marks the beginning of a new year.
