The rupestrian sanctuary of Argeriz, also known as Pias dos Mouros, is situated in the Ribas area, a zone integrated into the locality of Algeriz, in the municipality of Valpaços. This site is set in surroundings that allow for serene contact with the surrounding landscape, typical of the Trás-os-Montes region, inviting exploration and observation of the natural environment and the rurality that characterizes it.
This site is notable for its natural rock formations, shaped over time. Amidst these stones, it is possible to observe various cavities and depressions, designated as "pias", which gave rise to one of the names of the place: Pias dos Mouros. These concavities, some of large dimensions, appear to have been worked or adapted by human action, clearly distinguishing themselves from natural granite erosions.
Pias dos Mouros is considered an important testimony to ancient human presence in this area. The designation "rupestrian sanctuary" suggests that this place may have had a special meaning for the communities that lived here in remote times, possibly since Prehistory. The pias (basins) may have served various purposes, from collecting and storing water to rituals or ceremonies that were part of the daily and spiritual life of these ancestral peoples.
The natural surroundings of the Argeriz rupestrian sanctuary provide an environment of tranquility and contemplation. It is a space where geology and history intertwine, inviting visitors to imagine the life of the communities that once inhabited these lands. The landscape, marked by native vegetation and the imposing presence of the rocks, offers a peaceful setting for those seeking a moment of reflection and appreciation of natural and cultural heritage.
