The Pillory of Vila Nova de Cerveira is located in the heart of the village, within the area that once corresponded to the interior of the castle walls. It stands in the main square, where the old Town Hall (Paços do Concelho) was situated, marking the historical center of the locality. Its central position invites a pause to observe this landmark that has witnessed centuries of history.
This pillory, built in 1547, represents an important symbol of the municipal authority and judicial autonomy of Vila Nova de Cerveira. Its existence is directly linked to the granting of charters (forais) to the village, first by D. Dinis in 1321, and later renewed by D. Manuel I in 1512. These charters conferred upon the locality the power to govern itself and administer its own justice. The presence of the pillory in the square was, therefore, a visible manifestation of the power and liberties granted to the village.
Carved from granite ashlar, the Pillory of Vila Nova de Cerveira rests on a square base with four steps. Its shaft, octagonal in shape due to the chamfered corners, rises to a cubic capital. On this capital, shields bearing the municipal arms of Cerveira and the coat of arms of Portugal can be observed, arranged alternately. One of the most interesting details is the four iron arms that are still preserved, whose ends feature stylized zoomorphic decoration. The ensemble is topped by a conical pinecone-shaped pinnacle, crowned by a small sphere, giving the pillory a silhouette of simple and harmonious lines.
From a judicial function in the past, where it was the stage for public rituals and punishments, the Pillory of Vila Nova de Cerveira has today transformed into a historical and cultural landmark. It invites reflection on social and legal evolution throughout the centuries. Its historical and architectural importance was officially recognized in June 1910, when it was classified as a National Monument, ensuring its preservation for future generations and its role as a living testimony to the heritage of Vila Nova de Cerveira.
