The Manuel Valdés Sobral Firefighter Museum is located within the historic Valença Square. Situated on Rua Dr. Ilídio do Vale, it is near the Portas do Sol (Sun Gates), one of the old entrances to the walled enclosure. Its position is central within the intramural area, fitting into the urban environment of the fortress.

Origins of the Building

This building has a remarkable history of transformation. It began as a Royal Military Hospital, founded in the second half of the 17th century. Part of the support network on the border during the Portuguese Restoration War, it was administered by the Order of Saint John of God. In the 20th century, the property was adapted to serve as a fire station before being converted into the museum space known today, in the 1990s.

Architectural Features

With a rectangular plan, the building features two distinct sections and two-story facades painted white, with a plinth and window frames made of granite ashlar. The main facade, facing south, stands out with its higher central section featuring a curved finish and a gentle gable, displaying the Valença Firefighters' coat of arms and the inscription "MUSEU DO BOMBEIRO" (FIREFIGHTER MUSEUM). Above the main door, the inscription honoring the museum's name reads: "MANUEL VALDES SOBRAL". Details such as eaves above the windows and a balcony with a stone balustrade mark the adaptations made over time.

Inside the Museum

Inside the Manuel Valdés Sobral Firefighter Museum, a collection of artifacts tells the history of the Valença Fire Department. The highlight is on some of the old vehicles that were used over the years, allowing visitors to observe the evolution of firefighting and rescue equipment. In addition to the vehicles, there are other elements that bear witness to the dedication and work of the local firefighters.

A Tribute

The museum's name pays tribute to Manuel Valdés Sobral, a fundamental local figure for its existence. A dedicated volunteer of the firefighter association between 1944 and 1981, it was thanks to his collection and donation efforts that a large part of the pieces currently on display could be gathered.
