Viana do Castelo Cathedral

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Viana do Castelo > Viana do Castelo > Viana do Castelo > Santa Maria Maior e Monserrate

Location

The Cathedral stands as a central and reference point in the city of Viana do Castelo, located in the area of Santa Maria Maior and Monserrate. Its prominent position in the heart of the locality allows for easy identification and access in the urban environment, marking the landscape with its historical and architectural presence.

A Historical Presence

The history of Viana do Castelo Cathedral dates back to the first half of the 15th century, with its construction beginning around 1400 and being ready for worship in 1455. Initially dedicated to the Divine Saviour, the church was later consecrated to Santa Maria Maior, a name by which it is also known. Its cathedral status was formally established in November 1977, responding to a long-held desire of the local community. Throughout the centuries, the building withstood challenges, including two violent fires in 1656 and 1809, which caused extensive damage, but the church was always recovered, reassuming its parochial functions and keeping its importance for the city alive.

Imposing Architecture

The Cathedral stands out for its architecture, which evokes a fortified structure, giving it a robust and unique presence. Its facade is flanked by two grandiose towers, topped with battlements, which emphasize this defensive aspect. In the center of the facade stands its imposing Gothic portal, a remarkable work. This portal is adorned with archivolts that depict, through sculptures, scenes from the Passion of Christ. Guarding the entrance are the figures of six Apostles (Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint John, Saint Bartholomew, Saint James, and Saint Andrew) a sculptural ensemble that represents a significant example of national Gothic art.

Interior Treasures

Inside, the Cathedral features a Latin cross plan, composed of three stepped naves, punctuated by four arches. The space is enriched by several side chapels of varying dimensions, which house elements of great value. Among them, the Chapel of Saint Bernard and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament stand out. Special attention should be given to the Chapel of Senhor Jesus dos Mareantes, a space that holds a particular artistic and historical collection. Here, one can observe an image of the Dead Christ, acquired in England in 1593, and 17th-century Milanese vestments. The chapel also displays a tombstone dated 1404, decorated with astronomical symbols, suggesting a deep connection to the town's ancient community of seafarers. The interior also houses armorial tombs of the local nobility, and the sacristy reveals rich and detailed Baroque ornamentation.
