The Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus rises majestically at the summit of Mount Santa Luzia, at an altitude of about 250 meters, in the locality of Areosa, municipality of Viana do Castelo. Its elevated position offers a vast and impressive panorama over the city of Viana do Castelo, the mouth of the Lima River, and the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a place that provides a unique perspective of the Minho landscape, embracing the beauty of the union between the river, the sea, and the surrounding valley, with the Serra d'Arga visible to the north. This view has, over time, been recognized for its remarkable beauty.
The mount, covered by pine and eucalyptus forests, provides the sanctuary with a serene and inviting natural setting, contrasting with the proximity of the city's urban area that stretches at its feet. The open spaces next to the temple offer multiple vantage points to appreciate the landscape unfolding in all directions.
Mount Santa Luzia has a history of human occupation dating back to immemorial times, with archaeological vestiges pointing to the existence of a settlement as early as the 8th century BC. Over the centuries, the site was the stage for various religious constructions. In the Middle Ages, there was a hermitage dedicated to Saint Agatha, which was later rebuilt and expanded, becoming dedicated to Our Lady of Abadia.
The idea for the current sanctuary emerged at the end of the 19th century, culminating in the laying of the first stone in 1896, under the initial project of architect Ventura Terra. The construction was a lengthy process, extending through much of the 20th century, with the exterior completed in 1943 and the interior in 1959. Dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the sanctuary is an identity landmark and a cherished symbol for the inhabitants of Viana do Castelo, frequently referred to as the "Princess of Lima".
The Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands out for its grandeur and the fusion of architectural influences, namely Neo-Romanesque, Neo-Byzantine, and Neo-Gothic, with some elements evoking the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur in Paris. Its massive structure, supported by buttresses, emphasizes the monumentality of the building. One of the most impressive elements of its architecture are its rose windows, recognized among the largest in the Iberian Peninsula and standing out even in the European context.
In front of the sanctuary, a series of interconnected terraces and staircases create an elevated plaza that serves as a vast viewpoint, framing the view over the city. At the rear of the temple, there are green areas with small ponds, providing a peaceful atmosphere. On lower levels, the Lime Tree Garden, with its notable arboreal specimens and a central pond, contributes to the landscape's beauty and the serenity of the site, inviting a moment of contemplation in its natural and architectural surroundings.
