The construction of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda began at the end of the 18th century, around 1781, and continued throughout the 19th century, culminating in the complex that can be admired today. This sanctuary is a center of deep Marian devotion, attracting pilgrims and visitors due to its history linked to apparitions and the strong tradition of faith that remains alive to this day. Architecture and Sacred Path

The architectural ensemble of the sanctuary is remarkable, exhibiting a blend of styles ranging from Baroque to Neoclassical. The main church, with its imposing facade, is the heart of the complex. In front, a magnificent semicircular colonnade extends, welcoming the adro (forecourt), creating an atmosphere of solemn reception. Of particular note is the Staircase of Virtues, a grand monumental staircase that ascends in tiers, flanked by various allegorical statues, and punctuated by small artificial lakes with islands and sculptural elements. This route culminates at the church's adro. Beyond this, the sanctuary integrates the Chapels of the Via Sacra, a devotional path winding up the hillside, enriching the visiting and contemplation experience.
