House of Miguel de Vasconcelos or House of the Medallions

Category: Civil Architecture > House

District: Viana do Castelo > Viana do Castelo > Viana do Castelo > Santa Maria Maior e Monserrate e Meadela

Location

Situated in the historic heart of Viana do Castelo, in the union of parishes of Santa Maria Maior, Monserrate, and Meadela, the Casa de Miguel de Vasconcelos occupies a corner plot in the old urban fabric. Its position, adapted to the slope of the terrain, allows its facades to open onto a quiet pedestrian square and a side street with restricted access, both paved with traditional stone slabs. This setting places the building in a prominent location within the old limits of the city's medieval wall, providing an atmosphere of great heritage and visual value.

Architecture and Ornamentation

The Casa de Miguel de Vasconcelos, better known as the House of Medallions, is a remarkable example of Renaissance residential architecture, enriched by Mannerist style details. The main facade, facing northeast, is the most elaborate, featuring three floors that tell the story of its architectural evolution. On the noble floor, the door-windows stand out with their continuous balconies and meticulously crafted frames, adorned with multiple friezes. One of the windows is flanked by pilasters with classical motifs, topped by cornices and amphorae, and it is in this section that the two circular stone medallions that give the house its name are found, although already worn by time. The upper floors display a profusion of decorative granite elements, such as effigies, lacework, trophies, and cherubs, making the observation of its facades a constant moment of discovery for visitors.

Historical Legacy

This building carries with it a significant part of the history of Viana do Castelo and Portugal. Its construction probably dates back to the 16th century, having been commissioned by Jácome Rodrigues de Luna, a fidalgo knight and Commander of the Order of Christ, and his wife, Maria Barbosa. An inscription engraved on the main facade records this foundation, highlighting the importance of the families who inhabited the site. However, it is in the 17th century that the house gains special historical relevance, by being the birthplace of Miguel de Vasconcelos, a central figure in the Portuguese political scene. His life was linked to the court and the events that culminated in the Revolution of 1640, marking a decisive chapter in the history of the Restoration of Portugal's Independence.
