The Valença Museological Centre is located in the heart of the Valença Fortress, one of the most emblematic military structures in northern Portugal. It is housed in a building of great historical value, formerly known as the old prison and Domus Municipalis. Its strategic position within the walls offers visitors a privileged perspective on the historical environment and the importance of the Fortress-City.
This museological space was created with the purpose of preserving and interpreting Valença's rich memory. Through its collections, it is possible to trace a path through local history, from the oldest prehistoric vestiges to the medieval periods and the military flourishing of the fortification in the 18th century. The museum is dedicated to collecting and presenting the essence of Valença's evolution over the centuries.
The Museological Centre features different exhibition areas that invite exploration. On the upper floor, a section is entirely dedicated to Medieval Fortification, displaying a scale model and other elements that illustrate military architecture and the context of the Middle Ages in the region. There is also an Archaeology area, which deepens the understanding of protohistory, the Stone Age, rock art, and the Roman presence in Valença. Here, one can observe replicas of rock engravings and pillories, as well as original ceramic pieces and a Roman tombstone, the latter discovered in the municipality itself.
Visiting the Valença Museological Centre is an opportunity to uncover the layers of time that have shaped the city. The museum serves as a key to interpret the Fortress as an authentic "living museum", where every stone, street, and bastion has a story to tell. This space allows those interested to deepen their understanding of Valença's monumentality and historical role as an important borderland, rich in built and natural heritage.
