The Mamoa da Aspra is located in a predominantly rural area, within the locality of Âncora, which belongs to the municipality of Caminha. This monument is situated on a river terrace platform, on the left bank of the picturesque Âncora River valley. The surrounding area is characterized by a tranquil pine forest landscape, offering a serene and isolated environment, ideal for those seeking a moment of connection with nature and the past.
The Mamoa da Aspra is a remarkable vestige of the Megalithic period, an era dating back to approximately 5180 BC. This ancient funerary monument is a mamoa, meaning an artificial mound of earth built over a burial. It represents a direct link to the communities that inhabited this region thousands of years ago, offering a rare perspective on their ritual practices and their understanding of death and life.
This imposing mound is approximately 20 meters in diameter and 3 meters in height. Although it has suffered from the passage of time and some interventions that altered its original structure, it is still possible to observe the characteristic shape of the mamoa. Inside, no traces of a megalithic stone chamber were found, suggesting that burials were performed directly in a pit excavated in the natural sandy soil of the terrain. Archaeological investigations have revealed the presence of ceramic fragments, including Bell Beaker pottery pieces, and lithic material, which offer clues about the people who lived here and the artifacts they used.
Currently, the Mamoa da Aspra is recognized as a historical-cultural landmark, a place that invites reflection and imagination. Its isolated location, amidst the dense pine forest vegetation and the proximity to the river, provides an atmosphere of calm and introspection. It is a space where one can feel the vastness of time and contemplate the persistence of human memory through a structure erected by ancestral hands, millennia ago.
