The Church of Longos Vales is located in the parish of Longos Vales, in the municipality of Monção, Portugal. It is a peaceful place, surrounded by nature, ideal for those who appreciate history and culture.
The church was part of an old monastery founded in the second half of the 12th century by King D. Afonso Henriques. Over the years, the monastery received several privileges, standing out in the region.
In the 16th century, in 1551, Cardinal D. Henrique, who would later become king, transferred the monastery and its income to the Society of Jesus, through a bull from Pope Julius II. From that time on, the monastery was completely renovated by the Jesuits, and of the original medieval structure, only the chancel remains.
The Church of Longos Vales was classified as a National Monument in 1926, due to its historical and architectural importance, being a point of cultural interest in the region.
In 2010, the monastery was acquired by private individuals and is currently for sale. The church continues to be a place to visit, with its architecture and history attracting tourists interested in learning more about the local heritage.
