Situated in the Longra area, in the parish of Aboim das Choças, municipality of Arcos de Valdevez, this church stands on an elevation, slightly set back from the main road. The surroundings are characterized by granite constructions and verdant landscapes, typical of Alto Minho. From the churchyard, part of the village and the distant mountains can be seen, creating a serene and welcoming scenery.
Access is via narrow, well-maintained streets, which reinforce the rural and traditional atmosphere of the place. A stone staircase leads to the walled churchyard, where the main building is located.
The church features a construction of exposed granite stone, with simple yet solid lines, following a typical aesthetic of Portuguese rural Baroque. The robust bell tower stands out, with arched openings and a small lower niche, visible at the side entrance. The ensemble conveys balance and grandeur without losing its sobriety.
The side facades reveal a sequence of windows with well-crafted granite frames, and dark wooden doors that contrast with the whiteness of the joints between the stones. The roof is gabled, with crosses at the top, conferring a well-defined sacred character.
The space around the church is ample and tranquil, with well-maintained green areas, young trees, and a small paved path. The granite wall delimits the churchyard and reinforces the elevated and protected nature of the temple. The silence of the area and the presence of surrounding nature make this a place conducive to contemplation and introspection.
The presence of stone dwellings in the vicinity, with similar architecture, contributes to the harmony of the ensemble and reinforces the traditional character of the locality.
Viewed from different angles, the images show the sobriety and beauty of the construction: from the detail of the well-aligned windows in the side nave, to the main entrance flanked by carved stonework. The tower, with its visible bell, rises on one side, functioning as a dominant vertical element.
Outdoors, the space conveys a sense of serenity. The composition of the stones, the layout of the churchyard, and the framing with the sky and the mountain create a striking visual effect, especially on clear days or with dense clouds that create strong contrasts in the landscape.
