The Ganfei Convent stands in the eponymous locality of Ganfei, in the municipality of Valença. Situated in a serene setting, next to the old road connecting Valença to Monção, this historic site discreetly blends into the landscape of this Minho region, inviting contemplation and discovery.

Its Millennial Roots

This place boasts a history spanning over a millennium, with its roots delving into the Visigothic period. Historical documents indicate its destruction in the year 1000, followed by a significant reconstruction in 1018. This renovation was driven by Ganfried, a French knight who was later venerated as a saint, and whose name, St. Ganfei, eventually designated both the village and the monastery itself. In the mid-18th century, in 1760, his remains were transferred to the interior of the church, underscoring the deep connection between the site and the figure who gave it its name.

The Architecture Revealed

Despite undergoing significant remodelling in the 18th century, which altered its facade and main chapel, the Ganfei Convent preserves a valuable Romanesque architectural legacy. Its three-nave structure, characteristic of this era, can be observed, with a wooden roof supported by rectangular pillars and discharge arches connecting them. The original portal, however, did not survive later interventions. Also noteworthy are the spacious cloister, a place of great serenity, and the remnants of old fountains and water features that once adorned this Benedictine complex. Due to its undeniable historical and architectural value, the convent has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1956.
