This remarkable building, of neoclassical inspiration and dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, features a rectangular plan with a composition of three distinct bodies. The central body, more elevated, stands out on the main façade with an imposing triangular pediment, where royal coats of arms sculpted in stone can be observed. The light-colored façade, marked by pilasters at the corners and a projecting cornice, is accessed by a double staircase that culminates in a railed landing, flanked by a fountain. The three main arched doors, topped by French windows, lend a formal elegance, revealing the attention to detail in its original conception.

Legacy and Transformation

The history of the São José Community Centre is a narrative of evolution and adaptation. Initially conceived as a hospital in the 19th century, a project that began in 1872 and was inaugurated in 1885, the choice of land was due to its "airy, healthy, and beautiful panoramic" condition. After decades of service as a health unit, the building closed its doors as a hospital in 1984. At the end of the millennium, between 1998 and 1999, it underwent a profound remodeling that transformed it, opening in 2000 as the São José Community Centre. This transition marked its reinvention, now playing a fundamental role in the social and cultural life of the community, while retaining some vestiges of its original function in the main atrium.
