The Chapel of São Bartolomeu de Antas is located in a serene rural area, in the village of Sapardos, in Antas, which belongs to the municipality of Paredes de Coura. Situated north of a public road, it is set within a grassy churchyard, creating a tranquil and isolated environment. Its location, near an old road and a manor house, evokes its historical relevance as a point of passage and support.
The history of the Chapel of São Bartolomeu dates back to the 16th century, with its construction in 1592 by order of Lopo de Antas, a figure connected to the Paço de Antas (Manor of Antas). This edifice served not only as a place of worship and burial for the family but also played a crucial role as a wayside chapel. It offered support and refuge to pilgrims and travelers traversing the ancient route towards Santiago de Compostela, a distinctive feature that has marked its identity throughout the centuries.
The chapel features architecture of great simplicity, characterized by its rectangular plan integrating a nave and a chancel. Its porch stands out, an element traditionally present in wayside chapels, providing shelter at the entrance. One of the most notable aspects are the Roman milestones, stone columns that once marked distances on ancient roads, and which were ingeniously repurposed in the chapel's structure, specifically as support for the porch and in defining the churchyard. The facades are plastered and painted white, with granite details, including the perfect arch portal and an arched bell-gable, contributing to its modest and authentic aesthetic. Two simple granite tomb chests flank the main entrance, highlighting its historical and family connection.
