Located in the town of Caminha, in the district of Viana do Castelo, next to the mouth of the Minho River.
It developed as a strategic point for the defense of Portugal's northern border, especially from the 12th century onwards, when security on the coast improved.

, During the crisis of 1383-1385, the population of Caminha supported D. João I in the fight for independence.
, In the 17th century, during the Restoration of Independence, the fortifications were modernized with bastions and turrets.

The walls and remains of the fortification are classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1967.
