The Minho River Aquamuseum is located in Vila Nova de Cerveira, in a riverside area that embraces the banks of the Minho River. Its location allows for direct contact with the natural surroundings of this waterway, offering a tranquil perspective integrated into the river landscape. It is situated in an accessible area of the town, inviting visitors to a visit that is complemented by the outdoor environment.
Inside the Aquamuseum, it's possible to embark on a representation of the Minho River, from its source in Spain to its mouth in Caminha. A series of aquariums, with capacities ranging from 1200 to 6000 liters, reproduce the river's different environments, showcasing the diverse fish species that inhabit it. Visitors can observe over forty species, including trout, mullet, and lamprey, following the fluvial ecosystem along its course.
In addition to aquatic life, the Aquamuseum dedicates a space to the cultural heritage associated with the Minho River. Here, one discovers the fishing techniques that shaped generations of men and women connected to this river. On display are equipment, materials, tools, and clothing used by fishermen, offering a window into their traditions and way of life, which evolved in harmony with the waters of the Minho.
The Minho River Aquamuseum also stands out for hosting a space dedicated to otters, emblematic semi-aquatic mammals of our rivers. In a specially designed outdoor area, it's possible to observe these animals up close. The presence of otters highlights the importance of conserving fluvial ecosystems and the richness of the Minho River's biodiversity, providing an opportunity for contact with local fauna.
Inaugurated in July 2005, the Aquamuseum plays an important role in promoting knowledge about the natural and ethnographic heritage of the Minho River basin. This space functions as a meeting point for disseminating biodiversity and riverside culture, contributing to a greater understanding and appreciation of the fluvial ecosystem and its traditions. It also includes areas that allow for in-depth studies and the sharing of information about the river.
