The Montedor Mermaid is located in the coastal area of Montedor, belonging to the locality of Carreço, in the municipality of Viana do Castelo. Situated by the sea, the structure benefits from a natural environment where the blue of the ocean stretches to the horizon. Its position offers an unobstructed panoramic view of the coast, framed by the characteristic rocky landscape of this area.
This unique element, known as the Montedor Mermaid, is actually an old sound signal designed to aid maritime navigation, especially in foggy conditions. Its history dates back to 1919, when a compressed air sound signal was initially installed in the nearby Montedor Lighthouse. Its primary function was to emit sounds that warned vessels of the proximity of the coast, ensuring safety at sea.
Over time, this navigation aid underwent transformations. In 1952, the original signal was deactivated from the Montedor Lighthouse and transferred to the Nazaré Lighthouse. At the Montedor site, a new electric "mermaid" was then installed. It was this electric version that, in 1960, found its definitive location in the structure visible today, strategically positioned by the ocean to maximize its effectiveness.
Although it no longer performs its original function, the Montedor Mermaid remains a landmark in the coastal landscape. The structure, erected on the coastline, stands out for its sober and functional presence. It represents a testament to the evolution of navigation aid systems and humanity's relationship with the sea. Its location provides an interesting observation point, inviting contemplation of the vast maritime expanse and the robustness of the Minho coast.
