Built in the 18th century, it belonged to an influential Portuguese noble family.
Notable among the owners were Rodrigo António da Costa Pereira de Gouvêa, nobleman of the Royal House, and his son Gaspar José da Costa Pereira de Vilhena Coutinho.
The house was the birthplace of D. Mariana Joaquina Apolónia da Costa Pereira de Vilhena Coutinho, a prominent figure of the 18th and 19th centuries.
In the 19th century, it passed into the possession of Gaspar de Araújo e Azevedo e Gama, 1st Viscount of São Paio dos Arcos.
The sale of the house financed the reconstruction of the Vilhena Coutinho Palace in Braga.
One of the most emblematic buildings in Arcos de Valdevez, a testament to the history and influence of the nobility in the region.
Currently, it is an important cultural space, promoting art and knowledge.
