The Portuzelo Castle is located in the parish of Santa Marta de Portuzelo, in the area known as Fonte Grossa, within the municipality of Viana do Castelo. This palace stands out for its placement in a rural and isolated environment, harmonizing with the surrounding landscape. It is positioned approximately five hundred meters from the Lima River, near the road connecting Viana do Castelo to Ponte de Lima, nestled in a tranquil Minho setting.
The property, delimited by walls, offers observers a glimpse of its unique architecture and rich history, in a setting that preserves its original atmosphere.
Dating back to 1853, Portuzelo Castle, also identified as António Pereira da Cunha's Palacete, was born from the vision of a noble poet with the same name, António Pereira da Cunha e Castro Lobo. His return from a trip through Bavaria and other Germanic regions profoundly inspired him, leading him to desire a residence that recalled the buildings he had observed there.
With notable enthusiasm, António Pereira da Cunha himself is believed to have sketched the plan for this "castle" that aligned with the emerging romantic spirit of the 19th century. It is worth noting that the site already housed, in the 13th century, an old tower house, giving the area a long tradition of manorial presence.
The architecture of Portuzelo Castle reflects a strong romantic influence, presenting a castellated form that makes it distinctive. With a quadrangular plan, the palace is spread over two floors and is crowned by an imposing central tower. Its design expressively combines Neo-Gothic and Neo-Manueline elements, visible in the details of its façades.
Although part of the original project, such as the moat and drawbridge, is currently in ruins, the structure maintains its grandeur. In the inner courtyard facing east, it is still possible to observe a finely crafted stone fountain, which is believed to have originally come from the Carmo Convent in Viana do Castelo, adding a touch of historical and aesthetic value to the ensemble.
The recognition of Portuzelo Castle's historical and architectural value led to its classification as a Property of Public Interest, through a Decree published on September 29, 1977. This distinction underlines the palace's importance as an example of 19th-century architecture in Portugal, particularly the romantic style.
Its conception, influenced by European models and the particular vision of its creator, António Pereira da Cunha, represents a milestone in the assimilation and adaptation of new cultural and aesthetic trends of the era. Portuzelo Castle thus remains a visible testament to a period of great architectural creativity and ambition.
