Location

The Main Church of Viana do Castelo stands in the historic heart of the city, in the parish of Santa Maria Maior e Monserrate e Meadela. Its central position allows visitors to easily explore the oldest streets and emblematic spaces that surround it. Its proximity to the mouth of the Lima River, which historically shaped Viana's identity, gives this location a particular setting.

A Secular History

The construction of the Main Church of Viana do Castelo dates back to the early 15th century, immediately establishing itself as one of the most important buildings in the locality. Initially dedicated to the Divine Savior, the church later became known as Santa Maria Maior. Its status evolved over the centuries, being elevated to the category of Cathedral in 1977, a recognition of its lasting religious and patrimonial importance. Since 1953, it has been classified as a Building of Public Interest, attesting to its value for the country's culture and history.

Architecture and Imposing Facade

Upon observing the Main Church, visitors are invited to appreciate a remarkable fusion of styles. Its fortress-church appearance, of Romanesque inspiration, is evident in the two towers flanking the facade, crowned by battlements, giving it a robust and unique presence. In the center, the main Gothic portal stands out, a sculptural work of great beauty. Its archivolts display scenes from the Passion of Christ and the figures of the Apostles, a notable and singular artistic expression in Portuguese Gothic. Above the portal, a rose window with a filigree frame complements the ensemble, enriching the beauty of its exterior composition.

The Interior and Its Treasures

The interior of the church unfolds through three naves extending in a Latin cross plan, inviting a serene discovery. The space houses an ornamentation revealed in details, from the various side chapels to the armorial tombs evoking local nobility. Among the various chapels, that of the Lord Jesus of the Seafarers holds particular relevance, reflecting the city's deep connection to the sea and its men. This space preserves pieces of great artistic and historical value, including an ancient image of the Dead Lord and a tombstone from the early 15th century decorated with astronomical symbols, testimonies to the devotion of navigators. The church's sacristy also deserves close attention, with its rich Baroque-style decoration.
