Praia do Coral is located in Viana do Castelo, integrated into the urban area of Santa Maria Maior e Monserrate e Meadela. This beach, situated on the north bank of the Lima River mouth, is bathed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Its particular position, sheltered between two jetties, provides a unique setting, with views of the estuary and the VTS (Vessel Traffic System) Tower, a prominent element in the coastal landscape.
Characterised by an extensive sandy area and generally calm waters, Praia do Coral offers a tranquil environment. The serenity of its waters is due to the natural protection provided by the Lima River bar and, notably, by the west jetty, which extends for over 900 meters towards the sea. This geographical configuration creates an inviting refuge for those seeking moments of quietude by the coast.
The beach is also locally known as Praia do Aquário. Its main name, "Praia do Coral", has an origin linked to a specific event in local maritime history: on December 25, 2000, the Chinese ship Coral Bulker ran aground on the outer side of the jetty that protects this area. This event gave the beach its current name, marking it with a singular memory.
Since June 2017, Praia do Coral has distinguished itself as one of the first beaches in Portugal to allow the presence of dogs. This pioneering initiative resulted from a collaboration between local entities, with the aim of offering a space where pet owners can enjoy the beach experience in the company of their dogs. The location offers dedicated equipment that facilitates everyone's stay at the beach.
