This place is centrally located in the town of Ponte de Lima, precisely in the urban area of Arca e Ponte de Lima. It extends over the Lima River, connecting its banks and offering a view of the river landscape and the surrounding town.
The structure we observe today is a testament to the region's long history. Its foundation dates back to the Roman era, having been built in the 1st century as an integral part of Via XIX, an important route connecting Braga to Astorga. Throughout the Middle Ages, the bridge underwent significant expansion and reconstruction works. For this reason, its current architecture combines vestiges of original Roman engineering with medieval interventions, reflecting the evolution and various functions it performed over the centuries.
The bridge is one of the most recognizable elements of Ponte de Lima, even giving its name to the town itself. In addition to its historical value and architectural beauty, it holds lasting cultural importance. It is here that the Portuguese Way of Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela passes, making it a fundamental crossing point for pilgrims. The bridge thus remains a link between the past and the present, indelibly marking the local identity and landscape.
