The Church of Nossa Senhora da Guia is located in the town of Ponte de Lima, on the left bank of the Lima River, within the area of Arca and Ponte de Lima. Its elevated position, at the western end of the riverside Alameda, offers a serene perspective over the riverside landscape and the course of the river, integrating peacefully into the town's urban environment.
The history of this temple dates back to an ancient hermitage, dedicated to Saint Vincent the Martyr, whose origins are lost to time. Between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, a confraternity dedicated to the cult of Nossa Senhora da Guia was formed and decided to build a new place of worship. Given the original hermitage's vulnerability to river floods, the confraternity chose to construct the new building, between 1629 and 1630, on higher, safer ground. Later, in 1746, the church underwent significant improvements, including the addition of the narthex and an adjacent house intended for the chaplain.
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Guia displays 17th-century religious architecture, characterized by a single-nave structure. Its facade has sober lines, but gains expression through notable decorative elements, such as the volutes and flame urns that crown the frontispiece, and a central niche housing the image of the patroness. An advanced narthex, with three full arches, precedes the main entrance. The tower, although unfinished, is topped by a small bell-gable that gives it a distinct touch.
The interior of the temple invites contemplation of its artistic elements. The nave walls are adorned with a wainscot of patterned polychrome tiles (azulejos), dating from the 18th century. The rich gilded carving, in the National style, present in the altarpieces and the framework of the triumphal arch, captures attention with its detailed ornamentation. In the chancel, the wooden ceiling is decorated with painted coffers, while the stuccoed walls contribute to the solemn atmosphere of the space. On the pavement, it is still possible to observe ancient tombs, some of which date back to the 17th century.
