The Casa dos Barbosas Aranhas, known as the tower-house, is located in the picturesque village of Ponte de Lima, one of the oldest in Portugal. Situated in the Arca area, in the heart of the locality, this building stands out in the urban environment of the village, being easily identifiable by its notable presence. Its central position allows its characteristic architecture to be observed while exploring the historic core.
This remarkable construction dates back to the first half of the 17th century, the period in which it was erected. The Casa dos Barbosas Aranhas is distinguished by its unique architecture, which fits the concept of a "tower-house". The complex is composed of two distinct and interconnected elements: an imposing tower and a residential wing. This duality gives the building a unique character, where the robustness of the tower, which evokes defensive functionality, harmonizes with the residential part, more focused on comfort. The heritage value of the building was officially recognized in 1977 when it was classified as a Property of Public Interest, underscoring its historical and architectural importance.
In more recent times, the Casa dos Barbosas Aranhas has gained a new purpose, maintaining its relevance for local culture. Since 2016, this space has housed the Vinho Verde Interpretation and Promotion Center, a place dedicated to exploring and valuing the heritage and characteristics of this regional product. This new function offers visitors a different perspective on the region's culture, through what the building represents today, uniting its secular history with one of the hallmarks of the Limian landscape and economy.
