Casa da Garrida is located in the Arrabalde area, in the historic town of Ponte de Lima. Standing at the entrance to the town, its commanding position and surrounding woodland give it a distinct presence, marking the landscape for those arriving in this charming land of Minho.

Rococo Architectural Expression

This remarkable building is an expressive example of an 18th-century manor house, characterized by the Rococo style evident in its design. The main façade, with two floors, is richly adorned, reflecting the era's taste for ornamentation. The windows on the main floor, featuring balconies supported by modillions, are notable for their straight lintels and, above them, for the exuberant upper decoration, composed of delicate festoons, cartouches, and shells.

The Integration of the Chapel

The structure of Casa da Garrida includes a chapel, which, although an integral part of the complex, is presented in a unique, almost independent manner at one of its ends. The connection between the main house and the chapel is made by a more recessed section, which incorporates an elegant colonnade on the upper floor, culminating in a small bell gable. In the chapel, the ashlar portal is flanked by small pinnacles and topped by a faceted window, above which a stone coat of arms can be seen, reflecting the importance and artistic detail of the construction.

Classified Heritage and Current Use

Classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1982, Casa da Garrida is a heritage site that significantly illustrates the manorial architecture of the Minho region. Originally a distinguished residence, the property is now owned by the municipality. Currently, the building is primarily used for cultural purposes and municipal events, giving it an active role in the community life of Ponte de Lima and ensuring the continuity of a relevant purpose for the preservation of this historic asset.
