The Pillory of Paredes de Coura is a symbol of the municipality's former autonomy. The town received its first charter in 1257, granted by King Afonso III, and later a new charter in 1515, during the reign of King Manuel I.
It is located in a central square of the town, next to the building that was once the district prison and currently functions as a tourist information office and auditorium.
The pillory was dismantled and lost for several years, being rebuilt in 1909. The current structure includes original parts and elements added during that reconstruction.
- It rests on a base with three quadrangular steps.
- It has a simple cylindrical column with a discreet capital.
- The top of the monument has a pedestal with geometric shapes and a large smooth sphere.
- It features an attached national shield and is crowned by an elongated cone.
The construction follows a typical 17th-century model, characterized by simplicity and a play of shadows and volumes. It is one of the most important historical landmarks of the town.
