The Megalithic Necropolis of Serra Amarela is located in the district of Viana do Castelo, within the municipality of Ponte da Barca. This fascinating archaeological site covers an area near the localities of Entre Ambos-os-Rios, Ermida, and Germil. Set within the grandeur of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, the site offers a mountainous setting of unique beauty, where the untouched nature of Serra Amarela and ancient heritage combine in perfect harmony.
This remarkable funerary complex is an eloquent testament to human presence in the region since prehistoric times. The necropolis is composed of a set of about 37 monuments, mostly known as mamoas. While exploring the site, it is possible to discern the primary materials used in the construction of these ancient structures, namely imposing granite blocks and, at times, the presence of milky quartz, which give the monuments a remarkable robustness.
Among the various structures that make up the necropolis, the dolmens stand out: characteristic funerary monuments with vertically arranged granite pillars. Some of these dolmens reveal the existence of corridors, architectural elements that facilitated access to their interior. Notably, certain examples still preserve traces of paintings made with ochre, a rare and valuable detail that offers a glimpse into the artistic and symbolic practices of the communities that inhabited this region in remote times.
The exceptional value of the Megalithic Necropolis of Serra Amarela has been officially recognized since 2013, the year the site was classified as a Site of Public Interest. This designation underscores the historical and archaeological importance of the complex, not only for the region but also for the national heritage. A visit to this necropolis represents a unique opportunity to delve into the ancient history of the Iberian Peninsula, understanding the beliefs and funerary rituals of the societies that built it.
Beyond its undeniable historical and archaeological relevance, the necropolis benefits from a splendid landscape setting. Immersed in the majestic Serra Amarela, the visit is enriched by the surrounding natural beauty. The vast mountainous expanses, the peculiar rock formations, and the tranquility that emanates from the environment create a setting that enhances the experience, uniting the richness of prehistoric heritage with the grandeur and serenity of nature.
