The Museum of Horse-Drawn Carriages is located in the locality of Geraz do Lima, which is part of the municipality of Viana do Castelo. The space is installed at Quinta da Bouça, in an area of the parish sometimes referred to as the São Tiago zone.
This thematic museum offers a look at the means of transport that relied on animal power. The main focus is on carriages and horse-drawn vehicles, bringing together a significant collection of pieces that illustrate the evolution and diversity of these vehicles. The collection includes over fifty examples, with a highlight on 19th-century models.
It is possible to observe a wide range of types of carriages, adapted for different purposes of the time. The collection ranges from elegant vehicles used for pleasure rides, buggies designed for daily family use, to specific carriages for hunting or examples that served as public transport.
The collection that gave rise to the museum was formed by Dr. Lopo de Carvalho, a doctor with a remarkable interest in horse-drawn carriages. His passion dates back to childhood, influenced by a small buggy he received from his grandfather. Many of the carriages on display have a direct connection to his family's history, having been used by his ancestors, and were carefully preserved and restored by him.
Among the vast collection of carriages, a piece of particular interest is a Hooded Phaeton, an elegant model with twelve springs, manufactured by the renowned Parisian firm Labourdette
