The Areosa Windmills are located in the parish of Areosa, in the municipality of Viana do Castelo. They are situated next to the Northern Coast Ecovia, near the mouth of the Pêgo stream. This privileged location offers an environment that combines the sea breeze with the serenity of a coastal and riverside landscape.
These windmills bear witness to a relevant part of local history and the way of life of the communities. Originally dedicated to the grinding and milling of corn cultivated in the fertile lowlands of Areosa, they were, in the not-too-distant past, of significant economic importance for the subsistence of the region. Their function was essential for transforming agricultural production, demonstrating human ingenuity in utilizing wind power.
The cluster of the four Areosa windmills stands as a distinctive architectural element in the local landscape. Some of these examples have been carefully restored, allowing for the observation of their circular structure and sails, typical of these traditional constructions. Their presence, in harmony with the natural coastal and fluvial environment, invites a peaceful stroll and contemplation of the surrounding scenery, evoking the simplicity and resilience of rural heritage.
