The Gelfa National Forest is located in the municipality of Caminha, to the south, between the mouth of the Âncora River and Forte do Cão (Dog Fort). It is close to the EN 13 national road.

The forest incorporates an important dune cordon, formed over the years by sediments brought by the sea and rivers, which helps to protect the coast and enhance the landscape.
