It is located in the village of Lindoso, in the municipality of Ponte da Barca, district of Viana do Castelo, in a strategic position near the border with Spain.
Built in the Middle Ages, it was erected with the function of monitoring and defending the border. It is believed to have been ordered built during the reign of D. Afonso III and reinforced during the reign of D. Dinis.
Although it was not the scene of major battles, it played an important role during the Restoration War, when it was occupied by Spanish troops and reconquered by the Portuguese. During that time, it was modernized to better withstand attacks.
The castle was classified as a National Monument in 1910, guaranteeing its preservation over time.
It has a medieval structure with stone walls, towers and a parade ground. In the 17th century, defenses for artillery were added, including star-shaped walls, gun emplacements and sentry boxes.
Visitors can explore the walls, the keep, the cistern, and the remains of the warden's residence, the barracks, and the chapel. The castle also offers impressive views of the surrounding landscape.
It has undergone restoration work throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, including archaeological excavations to better understand its history. Today, it is a tourist attraction of great interest in the Minho region.
