The Largo Senhor dos Aflitos is located in Ponte de Lima, in the area of Ardegão, Freixo, and Mato. This square offers a serene environment, marking a harmonious transition between urban characteristics and the tranquility of the Minho countryside. Its position invites a moment of pause and contemplation, away from the central bustle, providing a peaceful refuge.
At the heart of this square stands the Crucifix of Senhor dos Aflitos, a notable stone structure. It consists of a tall cross displaying the image of the Crucified Lord, flanked by four robust stone columns that give it a striking presence. Inside, the ceiling reveals unique paintings representing the four evangelists, Saint Matthew, Saint Mark, Saint Luke, and Saint John, and, symbolically, the instruments associated with the Passion of Christ. Although the exact date of its construction is not precisely documented, it is thought to have been erected after the year 1743, following the rebuilding of the local parish church.
The Largo Senhor dos Aflitos is also distinguished by its natural surroundings, rich in botanical diversity. Here, visitors can appreciate a variety of ornamental and forest trees, including linden, wild walnut, oleander, liquidambar, magnolia, plum, and albizia. However, among all of them, an exceptionally large ash tree stands out, considered unique in the region for its size and impressiveness. This arboreal ensemble creates a naturally cool and inviting atmosphere, ideal for a peaceful stroll or simply to enjoy the quietude and beauty of the place.
