The Poets' Garden is located in Ponte da Barca, on the left bank of the Lima River. Situated in the Cruzeiro area, this green space is close to the historic center of the town, offering a tranquil setting by the water and integrating into the characteristic riverside landscape of the region.

Poetic Essence

The name of this garden pays homage to two illustrious poets born in Ponte da Barca: Frei Agostinho da Cruz (1540-1619) and Diogo Bernardes (1530-1605). Frei Agostinho da Cruz, a friar of the Capuchin Order, stood out for his spiritual poetry. Diogo Bernardes, known as the "Poet of the Lima," was a prominent figure in Portuguese lyric poetry, whose work frequently celebrated the river and his hometown, and who accompanied King D. Sebastião at the Battle of Alcácer Quibir.

Traces of the Past

Within the garden's grounds, it is possible to observe elements that tell part of the local history. One of them is the Pombaline Market, a unique example of 18th-century architecture. This structure was originally built to serve the merchants participating in the free fair held there. Nearby stands the Pillory of Ponte da Barca, classified as a National Monument. Its granite column, with decorative elements reminiscent of the D. Manuel I period and the Order of Christ, symbolizes the town's ancient autonomy and jurisdiction.
