The Jardim Colégio Português is located in the area of Cristelo Covo and Arão, in the town of Valença. This place is notable for its prominence in the urban landscape, being easily spotted by those circulating on the city's central avenues. Its size and uniqueness make it stand out in the surrounding environment.
This space has its roots in the vision of Joaquim Apolinário da Fonseca, a Valencian benefactor who spearheaded its construction. Started in 1910 and inaugurated in 1928, the main building was initially conceived as an asylum. Over the decades, it played a central role in the life of Valença, housing educational institutions such as Colégio Português, a high school, and later, a higher education institution.
From an architectural standpoint, the building stands out for its hexagonal plan and an extensive and unique construction volume. Elements like the dome tower and the Chapel of Our Lady of Fátima contribute to its grandeur, marking its presence in the memory of those who visit Valença.
Currently, Jardim Colégio Português has been transformed into a public space, intended to serve the community and visitors. The revitalization of its space aims to provide a pleasant environment for leisure and socializing. It is a point where history and architecture converge, offering an area for various social and cultural activities.
