Located in the heart of the Historic Center of Ponte de Lima, the Mother Church is an unmissable landmark. Its position allows visitors to appreciate the traditional urban surroundings of the town and the tranquility of its oldest streets, being set in an environment that preserves its original charm and local authenticity.
The history of the Mother Church of Ponte de Lima has its roots in the 12th and 13th centuries, when a Romanesque building of more modest dimensions stood on the site. With the growth of the community and the need for a larger place of worship, the construction of the temple we know today began in the 15th century. Over the centuries, the church has undergone successive interventions and extensions, resulting in a fusion of different architectural styles. A significant remodeling from 1567 onwards stands out, which gave it a strong Mannerist influence in its main structure.
The interior of the church showcases its structure, marked by a single nave. The chancel, with a rectangular plan, is covered by an elegant coffered barrel vault. In the south transept, a large gilded wood altarpiece, dated 1729, dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows and representative of the national style of the period, is noteworthy. On the main facade, a Neo-Gothic rose window, inspired by the one at the Church of São Francisco in Porto, was added in 1932, complementing the overall aesthetic.
Since May 2013, the Mother Church of Ponte de Lima has been classified as a Monument of Public Interest, a recognition that underscores its relevance to the national heritage. Its elevation to a Collegiate Church in the past attests to its profound historical and religious importance for the community of Ponte de Lima. Visiting this site provides an opportunity to observe the architectural and artistic evolution over the centuries, reflecting a journey that marks the identity of Ponte de Lima.
