The Mother Church of Vila Nova de Cerveira is located in the heart of the town, integrated into the urban area of Vila Nova de Cerveira and Lovelhe. It is situated in a wide and inviting paved square, dominating its surroundings and directly facing the main street of the town. Its central position makes it a visible and easily accessible landmark for those exploring the historic center.
This religious building has a rich and complex history, with its origins dating back to the 16th century. However, the site where the church stands holds traces of much older human occupation. Archaeological excavations carried out in the early 21st century revealed the presence of a 17th-century cemetery and, beneath it, even deeper discoveries, including Roman ceramics from the 1st century AD and a High Middle Ages wall, which may be linked to a primitive religious construction. This historical continuity gives particular value to the site, bearing witness to centuries of life and devotion in Vila Nova de Cerveira. The church also underwent a significant reconstruction in the 19th century, which contributed to its current configuration.
The Mother Church of Vila Nova de Cerveira is a remarkable example of the transition between the Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Its imposing main facade is marked by a curved lintel portal topped by a large window, and is flanked by two bell towers, one of which features a clock. The front is crowned by a concave pediment that adds dynamism to the ensemble.
Inside, the church features three naves, separated by robust arches supported by columns. The highlight is the rich gilt woodcarving that adorns the main altar, where one can observe a tabernacle flanked by sculptural panels representing the Visitation of the Magi and a scene of the Last Judgment. In the side naves, there are other chapels and altars with woodcarvings, some in polychromy. The baptistery, in turn, is decorated with a wainscoting of stamped tiles, in blue and white tones, adding a touch of color and pattern. The choir loft, supported by arches, and the opposing pulpits, with their stone bases and wooden balusters, complement the architectural and artistic experience of this place of worship.
