The Church of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos, or Mother Church, is located in a central spot in the town of Ponte de Lima. Its location allows visitors to walk through the town's historic streets and easily discover this monument, which harmoniously integrates into the urban fabric and is close to the famous Lima River and its bridge.

From Gothic Heritage to Mannerist Trace

This remarkable temple began construction in the mid-15th century, during a period when Gothic architecture was prominent. It likely stands on the site of a previous Romanesque-style building. From its initial phase, the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos still retains a striking main portal. This features a pointed arch and six archivolts supported by columns decorated with vegetal motifs, demonstrating the artistic beauty of the era.

In the mid-16th century, the building underwent a profound renovation that significantly transformed its structure. The church was expanded, acquiring its current configuration with three naves, a tripartite chancel, and a transept with side chapels. The main chapel, in turn, gained a polygonal shape, and the ceiling was covered by a barrel vault with coffers. These interventions, by introducing round arches, gave the ensemble a Mannerist character. A more recent addition, from 1932, is the Neo-Gothic style rose window that embellishes the upper part of the main façade.

Classified as a Monument of Public Interest since 2013, the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos transcends its religious function to assert itself as a living testament to the architectural and cultural evolution of Ponte de Lima. Its history, inscribed in its stones, reveals the superimposition of styles and the different eras that shaped the town and its community over centuries.
