The Cerveira Art Biennial Foundation is headquartered at the Cerveira Cultural Forum, a building integrated into the urban fabric of Vila Nova de Cerveira. This locality, situated in Alto Minho, is recognized for its strong artistic legacy and dynamism, often being referred to as the "Village of Arts". Its location contributes to the cultural experience of its visitors, with art being present in various points throughout the village.
The Foundation's history is intrinsically linked to the Cerveira International Art Biennial, an event whose first edition took place in 1978. The genesis of this initiative dates back to 1974, during a period of renewal in Portugal, with the aim of decentralizing culture and stimulating artistic creation. Since then, the Cerveira Biennial has established itself as one of the most significant moments for Plastic Arts in Portugal, being the oldest art biennial in the country and one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula.
Throughout its editions, this event has served as a stage for the work of many prominent artists, both national and international, consolidating its reputation as a center of excellence and a reference point for contemporary art.
In addition to organizing the Biennial, the Foundation is responsible for managing the Cerveira Biennial Museum, which opened its doors in 2002. This museum houses a vast collection, with over seven hundred artworks, reflecting the evolution of modern and contemporary Portuguese and international art over the last four decades.
The collection is enriched with award-winning works from throughout the editions of the Cerveira International Art Biennial, as well as donations from various artists. The space serves as a platform for new perspectives on art, encouraging creation and critical thinking within the context of contemporary art.
