The Church of São Martinho de Friastelas is located in the village of Friastelas, in the municipality of Ponte de Lima. It underwent a careful urban and landscape arrangement in 1990. This work aimed to highlight the church's structure and its surroundings, providing an environment where heritage harmoniously integrates with the tranquility of the parish.
The history of the Church of São Martinho de Friastelas dates back to the 12th century, when its original construction laid the first roots. Although it preserves vestiges of its Romanesque origin, the church is a testament to architectural evolution over time. It did not remain unaltered, having been the scene of various transformations that shaped its current appearance, reflecting the different eras and styles that traversed it.
The building presents a captivating fusion of styles. Although its foundations are Romanesque, the influence of the Baroque period is undeniable and deeply visible. A significant intervention during this era endowed it with new features and decorative elements, both externally and internally. Inside, the main altar is notable, with its elaborate Baroque carving, standing out as one of its main sculptural pieces. The church's facade is marked by the presence of the bell tower, an element also added during the Baroque remodels, which contributes to its characteristic silhouette.
The relevance of the Church of São Martinho de Friastelas to national heritage is officially recognized. In 1967, it was classified as a Property of Public Interest, a recognition that underlines its historical and artistic importance. This distinction ensures the preservation and enhancement of this site, inviting visitors to appreciate the richness of its forms and the tranquility of its setting, a cultural legacy that remains alive in the landscape of Ponte de Lima.
