The Montedor Lighthouse stands on a promontory of the same name, in the parish of Carreço, belonging to the municipality of Viana do Castelo. Its elevated position offers expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean. The surrounding landscape is characterized by its wild and maritime nature.
The lighthouse structure consists of a robust quadrangular tower, built of granite stonework, reaching 28 meters in height. The light source, in turn, is situated at an altitude of 103 meters above sea level, ensuring its visibility from a long distance. A vast annexed building, in a "U" shape, complements the main tower, harmonizing with the ensemble. At the top, a lantern and a service balcony, painted a vibrant red, stand out in the coastal landscape, serving as an unmistakable reference point.
Inaugurated on March 20, 1910, the Montedor Lighthouse has since played a crucial role in the safety of navigation along the coast. Initially, its light came from a kerosene lamp with four wicks, equipment that had curiously already served the São Vicente Lighthouse. Modernization arrived in 1947 when the lighthouse was connected to the public electricity grid, optimizing its lighting system. Later, in 1987, its operation was fully automated, adapting to new technologies and ensuring the continuity and efficiency of its service.
Beyond its essential function in maritime guidance, the Montedor Lighthouse has consolidated itself as a true architectural and cultural symbol of the Viana do Castelo region. Its striking presence on the coastal horizon has been a source of inspiration for various artistic expressions and creative perspectives. A notable example of this deep connection is the existence of a song dedicated to it, titled "Canção do Farol de Montedor" (Song of the Montedor Lighthouse), a testament to its relevance as a local icon and the community's strong connection with the sea.
