Erected on the summit of Monte da Assunção, in the parish of Bela, municipality of Monção, the chapel is located at about 240 m altitude. From the main church square, a cobbled path ascends the slope, lined with pine trees, to the crest of the mount.
The building dominates the landscape to the north and west over the Minho valley and, to the southeast, over the Mouro valley. Only the southern flank is protected by trees, creating a contrast between the vast horizons and the welcoming atmosphere of the place.
Built in the third quarter of the 16th century, on the vestiges of an ancient hillfort, the chapel has since maintained its dedication to Our Lady of the Assumption. It continues to host liturgical celebrations and, since 1974, has been in the process of classification as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest).
Minor contemporary interventions have been limited to conservation, preserving the 16th-century design and the relationship with the granite construction tradition of Alto Minho.
The rectangular plan integrates a single nave and chancel, both covered by a gable roof with Portuguese tiles. The granite walls, with white-painted joints, feature buttresses at the corners that reinforce the structure's stability.
On the main facade, facing east, the portal with a perfect arch stands out. The voussoirs display sculpted foliage resting on semi-columns. Two medallions frame the entrance: to the north, a male bust is visible, and to the south, a female bust, currently somewhat eroded.
Inside, the granite flagstone flooring and wooden ceiling persist. The ogee arch, adorned with floral motifs, marks the transition to the raised chancel, covered by a groin vault and illuminated by a lateral slit.
The silence of the mount, the scent of pine trees, and the open view over the valleys define the atmosphere of the place. In the late afternoon light, the granite acquires golden hues, highlighting the mason's marks and the texture of the stonework.
The natural setting offers photographic opportunities, especially when the morning mist dissipates over the river or on clear days, when settlements can be distinguished on both banks of the Minho.
The chapel synthesizes the influence of the Renaissance in Minho religious architecture and testifies to the continuity of Marian devotion in Bela. Its strategically elevated location makes it a visual and spiritual landmark, linking community memory to the surrounding territory.
