The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception is located in the area of Monte, a place known for its elevated position. From this point, one can appreciate the natural surroundings that offer an atmosphere of tranquility. The chapel is situated in an area that invites reflection and enjoyment of the landscape.
The history of the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception began with an idea that emerged in 1904, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of an important religious dogma. The first stone for its construction was laid in 1906. This initial project involved the dedication of several local personalities, including Commander João Bernardino Gomes, who generously donated the land for construction and offered the image of the Virgin Mary. The chapel's significance from its origin was also highlighted by donations, such as that from Queen D. Amélia, who contributed a bench for the altar.
The chapel's trajectory is remarkable for its capacity to be reborn. In February 2010, a devastating natural event caused the destruction of the original structure. However, the image of the Immaculate Conception was found intact among the rubble, an event seen as a powerful symbol of hope for the community. Inspired by this fact, the Parish of Nossa Senora do Monte undertook an ambitious reconstruction project, which began in 2019 and was concluded with the dedication of the new chapel in December 2022.
The interior of the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception reflects the profound dedication that motivated its reconstruction. One of the most striking elements is the altar, which was meticulously reconstituted in gilded carving. This reconstitution, which was not initially foreseen in the project, was entirely realized by the parish. The collective effort of many allowed this space of worship and beauty to be returned to the community and offered for the admiration of its visitors.
