The Lovelhe Watchtower stands on the mid-slope of the Monte da Senhora da Encarnação, offering a privileged perspective over the surrounding landscape of Lovelhe and the town of Vila Nova de Cerveira. Its elevated position, once strategic for surveillance, still allows for a wide observation of the region today.
This watchtower, also known by other designations such as Fortim da Atalaia do Espírito Santo, was built in the 17th century, in the midst of the Portuguese Restoration War. Although its construction may have utilized an earlier watchtower, perhaps from the 15th or 16th centuries, its military relevance was consolidated by its defensive function. Later, in February 1809, during the Second French Invasion, it played a fundamental role in the defense of Cerveira, helping to prevent enemy forces from attempting to cross the Minho River. Its military use ceased at the end of the 19th century.
The Lovelhe Watchtower features a particular structure, with a central body of circular plan that corresponded to the battery. This building has a facade distinguished by a cornice and openings adorned with balconies. Inside this construction, a cistern stands out, crucial for the fortim's supply. The entire battery body is surrounded by a wall that incorporated the sentry walk, and the main access to the fortress is made through a notable broken arch.
The historical and architectural value of the Lovelhe Watchtower was officially recognized with its classification as a Property of Public Interest in 2017. This distinction underlines the importance of the site as an integral part of Portuguese cultural heritage. Since July 2023, the management of this monument has been under the responsibility of the Vila Nova de Cerveira Municipal Council, an important step towards its preservation and valorization.
