The Vila Nova de Cerveira Municipal Archive is strategically located at the entrance to the town, in a central area. It is situated near the Town Hall, placing it at the administrative and urban heart of Vila Nova de Cerveira, making it easily accessible for those arriving or exploring the locality.
Inaugurated in July 2009, the Vila Nova de Cerveira Municipal Archive was purpose-built with a modern and functional perspective. Its conception aimed, from the outset, to safeguard and enhance the identity and documentary heritage of the municipality. The space is characterized by its simplicity and organization, designed for the proper conservation and treatment of historical records.
This municipal facility plays a crucial role in preserving Vila Nova de Cerveira's documentary legacy. It gathers a vast collection of documents that were once dispersed across other locations in the town, such as the old Town Hall premises or the former Fire Brigade barracks. The importance of this collection is considerable, offering in-depth perspectives on Portuguese history and the region's evolution over centuries.
Among the most notable records available for consultation is the Foral de Vila Nova de Cerveira (Charter of Vila Nova de Cerveira), granted by King D. Manuel I on October 20, 1512, which represents the oldest document in the archive. Furthermore, the collection includes extensive documentation from the Municipal Council itself, with records dating back to 1512, as well as from the Municipal Administration (1835-1973) and a collection of legislation spanning a long period. These holdings allow for the investigation of multiple aspects of the life and development of the Cerveira community.
Beyond its essential function of preserving heritage, the Vila Nova de Cerveira Municipal Archive operates as a dynamic center for knowledge and community connection. It develops various cultural outreach activities, such as thematic exhibitions and conferences, which enrich the understanding of local history. Its modernization includes the provision of a digital catalog, facilitating access to a wide range of documentary holdings and bringing the archival heritage closer to the public interested in the region's history.
