The Chapel of São Martinho stands atop Mount São Martinho, in the parish of Abedim, municipality of Monção. Its elevated position offers a remarkable panoramic view over the Minho Valley, encompassing both the robustness of the highest rocks and the luxuriant surrounding vegetation. Although access can be somewhat challenging due to the mount's altitude, the scenic beauty of the landscape rewards arrival at this isolated location.
The chapel seen today dates from the 18th or 19th centuries, retaining no vestiges of the original hermitage that would have existed on the same site. This mount, however, is a site of long history, associated with an ancient medieval rock castle. Its presence is intrinsically linked to a rich tapestry of popular legends that have been passed down over time.
One such narrative tells the story of a queen, or lady, who sought refuge in these rocks, pursued by her husband. Faced with a lack of water and food, tradition recounts miracles: the appearance of a spring and the arrival of an eagle that brought her a trout. These events, believed to have demonstrated her divine innocence, led the king to forgive her. The queen then decided to remain at the site, dedicating herself to prayer and penance. This legend immortalized the area, also naming it "Penha da Rainha" (Queen's Crag). Popular devotion persists, and there is a natural basin in the rock near the chapel where tradition says São Martinho de Dume (Saint Martin of Braga) sat, and to which many attribute healing powers.
The ensemble of the Chapel of São Martinho and its historical and natural surroundings has been classified as a Site of Public Interest and an Area of Archaeological Sensitivity, recognizing its patrimonial and cultural value. Currently, the site serves as a historical-cultural landmark, keeping alive the connection between the sacred and the natural environment. The chapel continues to be a point of attraction for the local community and visitors, with pilgrimages and visits that underscore its spiritual relevance and its integration into the identity of the Alto Minho region.
